If we needed anything to confirm that we are a nation of try hards, then our recent #DMMTryHard competition proved it conclusively. We were flooded with entries from across the land (and indeed from try hards overseas), resulting in a totally hilarious multitude of expressions, from the Invisible Trumpet to the Rat Face and Screaming Banshee, to more esoteric expressions that may signify psychosis or extreme constipation – we saw it all.
Such was the volume of entries that we had to bring in a third judge to help us narrow down the selection, Sir Simey Mentz of the Vortex (aka Natimuk), whose expertise was enlisted due to his vast experience with the close cousin of the try hard face, the ‘little death’ face. Indeed, when it comes to being a try hard, Simey is an expert.
Enough with the waffling preamble – to the winners of the two DMM sport climbing kits – including 10 x DMM Alpha Sport Quickdraws ($47.95 each), a DMM Shadow Screwgate ($28.95), a DMM Rhino Screwgate ($31.95), a DMM Rope Bag ($89.95) and a DMM Chalk Bag ($33.95) – each kit valued at RRP $670.30.
After much deliberation, argument, insults and, finally, thumb wars, we gave one of the two #DMMtryhard prizes to Shevaun Cooley (aka Oleironbark on Instagram) for her submission of herself climbing the appropriately named Fuck the Law (25) at Kalbarri in Western Australia (image by Adyn Annett), and the other to Tim Haasnoot for his evocative shot of Jason Piper bouldering the also appropriately named Special School.
Congratulations to Shevaun and Tim, your entries were killer and made us laugh heartily, thank you.
The judges had the following to say about the images:
Oleironbark’s image: Face contorted into a grotesque mask of extreme tryingness, eyes squeezed into reality-rejecting closedness, teeth gnashing and grinding like the horrific sounds of great machines under immense strain – the face in this image is true try-hard.
Tim Haasnoot’s image: We don’t know if Louie Armstrong ever tied in but even if he did and was bearing down on some minging crimpers I’m not sure his Invisible Trumpet would be any better than Jason Piper’s. I also don’t know if the Big Bad Wolf “I’ll huff, I’ll puff and I’ll blow your problem down” impersonation generates more power for the climber. It does, however, make us laugh our arses off.
Thanks to everyone who embarrassed themselves or their mates by entering – it truly was hard to pick a winner. Here are a few of our other favourites (in no particular order of hilarity or tryingness):
